Stay on top of Quebec’s major energy projects

Quebec is in the midst of an energy boom. Many structuring projects are emerging and opening up new perspectives for the energy transition. For example, the Intelligent Renewable Energy Microgrids Innovation Hub (CIMERI) was launched in Lac-Mégantic. It is indeed an initiative that perfectly illustrates the dynamism and innovation of our ecosystem.
As members of the RQEI, we have a special role to play: to monitor, understand and contribute to these major projects that are shaping Quebec’s energy future. This is why we must remain attentive to developments, increase exchanges and continue to build bridges together between research, institutions and society.

Here is an update on the launch of CIMERI:
On August 19, 2025, the City of Lac-Mégantic and the Université de Sherbrooke officially launched the Innovation Hub on Smart Renewable Energy Microgrids (CIMERI). This flagship project for the Eastern Townships is based on two major infrastructures:
• The Lac-Mégantic microgrid, built by Hydro-Québec ($13 million).
• The 3IT platform. Université de Sherbrooke Energies, including a solar park and a battery storage system ($12.4 million).

Thus, these facilities together form one of the largest living labs in Canada to test, develop and integrate sustainable energy solutions. CIMERI aims to:
• Accelerate the adoption of new renewable energy technologies.
• Support the creation of specialized companies.
• Train the next generation of students and professionals in energy transition.
• Develop digital twins to optimize the operation of microgrids.

In addition, the project is receiving financial support from the Government of Quebec, with an initial investment of $750,000.
