Hydrogen, CO2 capture, bioenergy, long-distance transport and heavy industry are the top priorities, according to the International Energy Agency

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has just released a voluminous 400-page report entitled Energy Technology Perspectives 2020. It demonstrates, if it were still needed, that technological innovation is essential to the energy transition. Contrary to the simplistic ideas often conveyed by activists, politicians and many mainstream media, it is not enough to massively develop wind turbines, solar panels and electric cars to get rid of fossil fuels… Far from it.

While the production of electricity from energy sources that emit few greenhouse gases and the electrification of uses are important elements of the transition, they represent only a part of it. For the IEA, fully decarbonizing the world’s electricity production will only make it possible to accomplish a third of the way to eliminating greenhouse gas emissions linked to energy consumption by 2070.
